Sunday afternoon December 28th for our weekly outing with Alex, Frank and I took him to an unlikely duo of shows at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. We saw the joint activity of Jurassic Quest and Brick Fest Live. The show took place in three buildings, two dedicated to large dinosaur statues, many of them animated to move and roar. Advertisements were vague on the theming but kept referring to holiday festivities. We bought three tickets for a three hour time slot. Frank dressed for LEGOS, while Alex took the festive route, dressed in an elf sweater.
The dinosaur buildings were darkened and some of the glowing lights were intense and actually quite beautiful. Soon after our initial entrance, Alex was observant from the front and sides of creatures that had walk-around displays. Frank took in the back side.
Up close interesting encounters were investigated fully, while faraway vistas were equally impressive and color-splashed.
The red and green holiday colors we wore fit in with our surroundings. Alex the elf is camouflaged (almost) against the green forest backdrop. My green top and sweater stand out well, posing in front of a bright red lava display.
Bending around corners, a twisting path emerged from amongst the dinosaurs and led out to a display where participants were invited to dig for fossils. Alex liked the paint brush and sand experience.
Around yet another corner, eggs were hatching.
The second building was mainly extra pay-as-you-go activities, like face painting or crafting dinosaur Christmas ornaments. We did none of these. The second building also had a gruesome entrance to the gift store. It was fun to walk through, but we bought nothing.
On to the third building, we entered the LEGO experience. There were statues to observe made of LEGOs and a few mosaic murals for posing pleasure. Look at those muscle men, Frank and Alex!
We then plopped ourselves down next to a DUPLO pool of pieces We spent a good portion of the three hour time slot allotted on our tickets at the DUPLOs. Alex got quite into building structures. We broke for a snack break of French fries then went back for a second round of DUPLOs. The second round ended with Alex taking great joy in throwing the pieces back into the pool from afar. His aim was pretty good.
In a weird way, I liked the logo for Jurassic Quest. Our own personal quest for a fun final activity for 2025 was successful.
